Today, Pam, our upstairs neighbor, had the use of her daughter's car and invited me to go to Nosara with her. So exciting to travel to the big supermarket and a hardware store! Andy and i have been making a list of necessities for our huge outing to Nicoya with Bobbi on Friday - that's dozens of miles on a dirt road. So I was able to get much of what was on that list early. But first we stopped at Kaya Sol, the hotel and surfing school she owns with Ray her husband, run by her daughter Carly. Ryan, Pam's sin-in-law, stopped waxing a surfboard to help Pam with a couple little chores and offered many books to me for the taking. That is a huge relief since we didn't bring many with us. Even found a Carl Hiaasen I haven't read.
The car wouldn't start! Ryan beat the cables to the battery to remove the corrosion, but that didn't work. A Tico truck driver stopped to help and led the effort to jump start it. Took it to the gas station for a little cleaning of the cable while we visited the hardware store. Surprisingly large for this tiny town and very different from an American store. Most of the merchandise is stocked behind counters and is brought to the counter by a clerk. Pam was very helpful with her limited Spanish and the young clerk had a little English vocabulary, which he wanted to practice. When I asked for fishing line, he asked if it was for a shark. We managed to get a hose and some blue masking tape, with which I hope to cover the rusted refrigerator front. Speaking of which, even our never before used hot plate was already rusting when we arrived. The ocean air is brutal. Guess that is partly what happened to Pam's car.
Our adventure continued when we went to the glass store to have a table top made for Pam andfound it closed for lunch. So we backtracked to the supermarket, a different one from the first day. A little bigger, with a huge liquor department and small department store with clothes and household goods like glasses, cutting boards and the like. Even a little stove for sale. Also had a fresh meat department, but I chose frozen chicken breasts only. Like the first supermarket, it is basically a warehouse with huge openings to the outside.
Had another little adventure today. A pretty little tree in the planter in our lanai blew over in the heavy winds. I had roused a nest of hornets from it the day before when I was watering, so I was afraid to replant it. I called Bobbi who came right over. Her brilliant solution was to cut the branch holding the nest and move it out of the way. I felt like the ultimate city chick with no country sense at all.
Wafting into our windows is some music, which sounds like it is coming from the beach maybe. Amazing considering the wind, which just ripped off the curtains over our bed. Gotta go find that music.
